What Colour Part 2: Red

Where would we be without red - the colour of our life's blood, fire, danger, passion? Red can trigger a physical even violent reaction. It creates a sense of power by increasing inner strength, will and courage.

Red is an energy and confidence booster and the colour of lust. Red stimulates the nervous system and improves circulation.

Red is the first colour of the rainbow and the first chakra, creating a very childlike, "me first" temperament. The red chakra, or root chakra, rules the genitals and is the seat of primal instincts. Pure unchecked emotions such as lust, hate, jealousy and survival reside here.

On a more positive note, red inspires us to throw caution to the wind and go after what we truly desire - to chase our dreams.

An almost completely red minimalist painting, "Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue", by Barnett Newman has stirred violence in many people. So strong is the power of red that this painting has been attacked and restored on several occasions.

A psychotic man with a knife shredded the canvas and most recently, a veterinary student began striking the art with one of the museum poles designed to keep people back from the paintings. Power of red, or bad art? You decide.

A note of caution: Red is obviously a very powerful colour that can overstimulate. It is best taken in small doses such as food, clothing and meditation.
